Bava Metzia 102: Leaving Mezuzot, Claiming Eggs, Paying an Extra Month's Rent

A short note on daf 102, though I don't usually blog on Shabbat.  I couldn't resist documenting such a jam-packed  daf!

One must leave the mezuza on one's home after leaving, whether that home has been bought or rented.  If the the new residents are Gentiles it is not necessary to leave one's mezuza.  However, to ensure that there is no animosity, it is permitted to leave one's mezuza for a Gentile as well.

We are also reminded about the prohibition against taking a bird's eggs while the mother bird is present.  This is discussed in the context of when it is permitted to take and keep doves in one's home, in a dovecote, and elsewhere.  We learn here that people sometimes kept domesticated doves as pets.

Finally, a new Mishna speaks to the difficulty of paying a monthly rent versus a yearly rent when the year is intercalated after the rent agreement was reached.  In some cases, the rent is paid monthly, and the landlord is owed a thirteenth payment that year.  In other cases, the rent is payed annually and the landlord loses a potential extra month's rent.  Finally, in some cases, the value of the additional month is split between the landlord and the renter.
